The P J Veg Beds group met this morning and learnt all about how to attract wildlife to our gardens, especially bugs and hedgehogs. We had a lot of fun making small individual bug hotels to take home and made one big bug hotel for the P J garden. We also put some fairly traded Coconut Husk compost blocks in to soak so by tomorrow we should have 18 litres of compost to add to the Veg beds! You can buy these from www.traidcraftshop.co.uk Special thanks to Sarah aka 'Hedgehog person' who gave a brilliant talk about how to attract Hedgehogs to our garden. They love mealworms and bird seed, or chicken moist dog food but don't forget a bowl of water and never milk and bread - they like it but it makes them ill! If you have a pond, make sure it has a ramp so hedgehogs can drink without falling in and not being able to get out, and put in a hedgehog door in your fence as hedgehogs can roam up to 6 km a night! They like curling up in messy corners with lots of leaves and debris so don't make your garden too tidy. Thanks everyone who came along. We all had a good time making the PJ gardens and our own a little more wildlife friendly.
